Wynnum Manly Residents' Newsletter
courtesy of Peter Cumming, Brisbane City Councillor for the Wynnum Manly area
Dear Residents,
On Wednesday the 26th October I attended the AGM of Wynnum Family Day Care, Bayside Family Day Care and their affiliated child care centre "Children at Bay Terrace ". These organisations provide a great service in looking after children while parents are working. They have been expanding their coverage both in terms of numbers of children cared for and their geographic coverage.
On Saturday 5th November I had a busy day. I attended the Wynnum Baptist Church 's Community Visitors scheme End of Year Afternoon Tea. Local community stalwart Beryl Clegg received an award for 20 years service. Beryl is also a stalwart of Wynnum Meals on Wheels - GO BERYL.
The Caprice Dance school recital was next with the Cumming c hildren and their mother performing to the best of their ability and Dad watching them and all the other children and mums.
Next was a quick call in to Wynnum Scouts fundraiser followed by Brisbane Bayside State College's Trivia Night.
Finally it was off to the glitzy Monte Carlo Night at St. John Vianney's School on the hill at Manly where over 100 people attended a very enjoyable evening.
On Sunday 6th November I attended the "Children of Courage” Ceremony organised by the hardworking Lions Club of Moreton Bay. Lions gave awards to four local children who battle health problems to pursue a normal life.
On Tuesday, 8 November I attended the Wynnum Chorale Society Musicale. The Chorale Society put on their usual enjoyable concert. The beneficiary was the Wynnum Red Cross.
On Thursday, 10 November I attended a book launch called Jitterbugging at City Hall at the Wynnum Library. The book contained stories from local women about their lives during the Second Wolrd War.
On Saturday, 12 November I participated in the Bayside PCYC mini triathlon which was held at Rose Bay at Manly. I only did the paddling and running legs but still ended up with sore shoulders for several days. Everyone had great fun and I believe the event will grow next year.
School Bus Services
I have been advised that Brisbane City Council will be taking over a number of school bus services from Veolia at the start of the 2012 school year. Veolia decided to relinquish the services. The State Government through Translink will be paying for the services. Some of the services serve local schools like Iona College and the new Wynnum State School primary school while others assist Wynnum students to get to schools such as Lourdes Hill and San Sisto. Consultation with schools is underway. Keep an eye out for the new timetables.
